Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy is a psychological thriller and a profound meditation on grief, love, and climate change. The story is set on Shearwater, a remote, fictional island between Tasmania and Antarctica, which is home to the world's largest seed bank. Due to rising sea levels, the island is being evacuated, and the last inhabitants are the caretaker, Dominic Salt, and his three children: Raff, Fen, and Orly.

The family has lived in isolation for eight years, ever since Dominic's wife died. Each member is dealing with their own private grief and has adapted to their solitary existence in different ways. Dominic is burdened by the responsibility of his family and the seed bank, Raff is struggling with a recent heartbreak, Fen finds solace in the company of the island's seals, and nine-year-old Orly, a budding botanist, is worried about the future of the natural world.

The family's isolation is shattered when a woman, Rowan, is found washed ashore during a massive storm. She is injured and unresponsive, a survivor of a small boat that was destroyed in the storm. As the Salt family nurses her back to health, they find themselves drawn to her, and a fragile sense of hope and connection begins to emerge. Dominic and Rowan develop a quiet attraction, and Rowan finds herself imagining a future where she could belong to a family again.

However, the tranquility is short-lived. Rowan is not being entirely truthful about why she was on a boat headed for the isolated island. Her presence is not an accident; she has a hidden agenda connected to a personal tragedy. At the same time, she begins to uncover clues that suggest Dominic is keeping his own dark secrets. She discovers sabotaged communication equipment and a freshly dug grave, raising her suspicions.

The book is a tense and atmospheric exploration of trust, as each character grapples with their own past and their suspicions of others. The story unravels through shifting perspectives, revealing the inner struggles and unspoken secrets of each of the five characters. As a new and more powerful storm gathers on the horizon, they are forced to confront their fears and decide if they can trust each other enough to survive and protect the precious seeds that are their last hope for a future.

Wild Dark Shore is not just a thriller; it is a moving and lyrical exploration of grief, the devastating consequences of climate change, and the resilience of the human spirit. The island itself becomes a character, with its harsh but beautiful landscape serving as a backdrop for the characters' internal struggles. Ultimately, the book is about the impossible choices people make to protect the ones they love and the possibility of finding hope and new beginnings even as the world around them seems to be ending.
